♦ Hist. de l'art Objet d'art fait d'une réunion d'objets naturels sans aucune élaboration. Les premiers ready-made ont été présentés par Marcel Duchamp. « des ready-made d'inspiration surréaliste — une baguette de pain complètement argentée — » (Perec).

HIST. DE L'ART. Objet, généralement utilitaire, élevé au rang d'œuvre d'art par certains surréalistes, sans aucune élaboration. S'il [Marcel Duchamp] se réfugie à New York en 1915, ce n'est pas pour y être dupe de la civilisation et des idoles américaines. Il continue à créer des ready-made, la pelle à neige (1915) qu'il intitule In advance of the broken arm, la pelote de ficelle baptisée A bruit secret (1916), l'Apolinère enameled (1917), l'urinoir surtout, taxé de Fontaine (1917) (Hist. de l'art, t. 4, 1969, p. 936 [Encyclop. de la Pléiade]).
